Social Networks Hiajcking
Scammers often hijack accounts on social networking sites. They will spread malware or spyware by using various methods. One method is the use of spam messages to promote phishing sites, claiming there has been a violation of the terms of agreement or some other type of issue which needs to be resolved. Some messages send users to download an application or view a video. Some spam may seem to be sent from a user’s friends which can give the perception of being legitimate. Once the user responds to the phishing site, downloads the application, or clicks on the video link their computer will become infected.
Another method often used by scammers involves applications advertised on social networking sites, which appear legitimate. Many of these applications install malicious code or fake anti-virus software. Some software gives the scammers access to your profile and personal information. These programs will automatically send messages to your “friends” list, instructing them to download the new application too.
Infected users may be unknowingly spreading other malware by having infected Web sites posted on their Webpage without their knowledge. Friends will be more accepting of clicking on these sites since they appear to be from people tyhey know.
You can avoid being a victim:
•Adjust Web site privacy settings. Some networking sites have tools to adjust your privacy level or settings
•Be selective of friends on those websites. Once added, your “friends” can access any information marked as “viewable by all friends.”
•If you only wish to keep in touch with people you know then turn off extra options such as photo-sharing and texting.
•Be careful what you click on. Just because someone you know sends a link or video does not mean it is safe.
